PBS 45 & 49 presents
A DOO WOP CELEBRATION
featuring
Carl Gardner's COASTERS,
THE REFLECTIONS,
and THE CHIFFONS
Saturday, May 10 -- 4 PM and 8 PM
"The Clown Princes of Rock ´N´ Roll" - the pre-eminent vocal group of the original rock ´n´ roll era, and the first to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Coasters are one of the few artists in rock history to successfully straddle the line between music and comedy. Their undeniably funny lyrics and on-stage antics might have suggested a simple troupe of clowns, but Coasters records are no mere novelties -- their material is too witty, their arrangements too well-crafted, and the group itself too musically proficient. That engaging and infectious combination made them one of the most popular early R&B/rock & roll acts, as well as one of the most consistently entertaining doo wop/vocal groups of all time.
During The British Invasion of The 60's, few American groups were successful in their attempts to land a recordat the top of the national charts. The Reflections beat the odds with a string of highly acclaimed, top selling hits. Their first hit, "Just Like Romeo & Juliet", was a multi-million seller,
and in quick succession The Reflections continued to dominate the charts with
"Shabby Little Hut", "Poor Man's Son" and "Like Columbus Did".
The Reflections achieved success purely on the strength of their well-crafted harmonies
and cool professionalism. It's no wonder that four decades later The Reflections are still heralded
as one of the finest vocal groups of The Sixties Pop and Doo-Wop Music Era.
The Reflections' name hangs proudly on the wall of the Cleveland Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.
The Chiffons' sassy flair made them one of the top Girl Groups of the early '60s. With their trademark tight harmonies, high-stepping confidence and the hit machine of Goffin and King writing songs such as "One Fine Day," the Chiffons made music that helped define the Girl Group sound of the era.

Pete Best Band,
Terry Sylvester,
formerly of The Hollies,
& The Return
Friday, May 30 -- 8:00 PM
The Pete Best Band captures the sound of the Beatles in their formative years - the early years for many 'was' The Beatles. John Lennon summed this up well - "We were at our best when we were playing in the dance halls of Liverpool and Hamburg. The world never saw that.
Terry Sylvester came to international fame in the unenviable position of succeeding Graham Nash as a member of the Hollies. A gifted singer and a talented musician, he fared well in the group for a dozen years, during which they cut three of their biggest hits and some of their best albums.
The captivating, fun, exciting spirit that came to be known as "Beatlemania" is alive again in The Return — the world's most authentic and entertaining Beatles tribute band. These four lads, all in their early to mid-twenties, have carefully and skillfully recreated the Beatles experience by not only performing all the great songs of the original four, but also by sporting the same suits, boots, mop-tops, musical instruments, and gear. The Return make it possible for music fans from every generation to experience the same thrilling rush felt by fans who were fortunate enough to attend an actual Beatles concert in the early sixties.
